Summary of Activities Permitted in Papahānaumokuākea 2022
Each year, the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) Management Board prepares a Permitted Activities Report to provide stakeholders with a comprehensive annual overview of the projects permitted within PMNM, and to highlight the activities and accomplishments of the co-managing partners and other monument permittees. Monument Management Board members include NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, NOAA Fisheries, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the State of Hawaii, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. All co-management partners provide content and use the report to brief their leadership and key constituencies.
A common theme of the activities conducted in the monument this year was captured in the Hawaiian proverb “Ho‘okāhi wai o ka like” which translates to “all of one color; harmonious or in unity”. The following summaries illustrate harmonious efforts by separate entities to protect and perpetuate ecosystem health and diversity and Native Hawaiian cultural significance.
