The localized management of marine resources has been gaining momentum on the North Shore of Kauaʻi, thanks to insightful community leaders who are diversifying ways to educate the public on sustainable fishing practices. The Hanalei Moon and Tide calendar is much more than a compilation of tidal predictions and lunar cycles; it also provides valuable information on the spawning seasons of several reef fish so harvesting can take place when these species are not reproducing. This is a traditional management practice that was once carefully studied by konohiki (supervisor of a land division which included fishing rights), and can help us be better stewards of our reefs.

The Hanalei Moon and Tide Calendar was made possible through the following partnerships:

  • Hanalei Watershed Hui
  • Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument
  • Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary
  • Hawaiʻi Division of Aquatic Resources
  • Waipā Foundation
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
  • Dr. Alan Friedlander, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa
