Raising public awareness about maritime heritage resources is essential for better understanding and protecting these sites. Protection comes through understanding the nature of heritage resources and what we can learn from them, as well as familiarity with established preservation laws. Education and outreach efforts for maritime sites emphasize "bringing the place to the people, not the people to the place" in a responsible manner. Maritime heritage outreach products include exhibits, films, magazine and journal articles and public presentations. Papahānaumokuākea's outreach efforts aim to reach a broad audience across the globe.
